Pentecost at Ascension

“Los oímos hablar en nuestras lenguas las maravillas de Dios… chacun de nous les entend parler dans sa propre langue des choses merveilleuses que Dieu a accomplies … we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God!”

Acts 2:11 (Spanish, French, English)

The Pentecost weekend at Ascension was a festival of languages and cultures, food and music. The weekend began on Saturday night with an open house dealing with housing issues in the neighbourhood. We thank the good folks at CAPE (comité d’action de Parc-Extension) for presenting in English and Hindi. Ruth Stone and Deaconess Emilie Stoller-Prozenko planned the event and publicized it. Lyman Stone organized children’s activities outside. Around forty adults and children participated.

On Sunday morning l’Ascension, the LCC French congregation, celebrated two baptisms. Our English service followed, and afterward both congregations joined together for an international potluck followed by a multilingual hymn sing. Rena Detlefsen from de l’Ascension – LCC, and Ruth Stone and Deborah St-Onge from Ascension, played and led singing in French, English, Hebrew and Zulu. Pastor St-Onge led a couple of stanzas in Spanish as well. We juggled two hymnals – the English LSB and the French liturgies et cantiques luthériens (or LCL) – and used projected slides to encourage everyone to follow along. We also had special music offerings in Thai and German. We had many non-Christians attending, and it was a joy to share Pentecost and our Gospel joy with them through food and song.

A Dominican woman and Mexican family, speaking Spanish but only a little English, joined us for worship, our potluck and the hymn sing. We offered them free copies of the new Spanish himnario luterano. They will be joining our English classes this week, as will several others who attended. We continue to build relationships with our community in the name of Christ Jesus our Lord!

A Blessed Pentecost Weekend
